Hello Penelope,

I'm suprised to see you pop up in this world...

I wish I could drop our TV service, but I'm out-voted by the rest of the family. I once had a customer who worked in the jail. He told me the TV was one of the best tools they had for manipulating prisoners. Threaten to take it away and they would follow the rules. Kurt Vonegut also wrote a short story involving a husband and wife watching TV, so handicapped they were unsure what they had seen right after they saw it. I'm sure it was meant to be absurd, but the fact is there is a chilling reality about the story.
I do watch TV, I also drive a car and sleep in a house. But there is something about this situation that makes me uneasy.

For me it would be quite easy to drop the yellow pages now. It's just that I have such a good sales person that calls on me for the account, I'd feel bad dropping it.
The newspaper is just the inverse. I'm pretty sure quite a few people still read it... but the expense... and when I ask new customers where they come from its always the internet. My experience with our newspaper has not been good. In fact things got so bad that the real estate companies in our town all got together and hired a company to put together an insert for the paper so we wouldn't have to deal with them directly. That's been going quite a few years now and the company we hired is excellent to deal with. But again, the extra layer ads expense.

Isn't it something? We run a really tight budget at home, with no TV service beyond rabbit ears (and we hardly use even that -- the TV, in our house, is almost exclusively for watching DVDs and videos). We have the measured service rate on our landline, which is only $12 or something like that, which they don't publicize; you have to know to ask for it. It's a good way to keep a landline going for emergencies or for a child's use. But I pay at least $135/month for a family cell phone package with unlimited texting. It is a ridiculous expense, but doing without our cell phones now seems almost unthinkable.

I work for a marketing communications firm, and some of our clients are certainly struggling with the yellow pages thing. In certain demographics they're hardly used, and the ads are so expensive, but it would be a scary step to let it go entirely. Maybe in another 10 years...
